Moreover, geopolitics and economic growth can be affected by indicators such as ease of doing index. It is observed that economic growth is influenced by four main casino1 factors, which include human capital, physical capital, and availability and quantity of natural resources and technology. Therefore, it is understood that the link between geopolitics and social media could have very adverse consequences and should be dealt with utmost care. Due to its complex nature, political organizations construct proper strategies to use social media to their advantage.
Advanced Online Media Use
- Ironically, as Iran has curtailed Internet freedom for its own citizens, the state has greatly expanded its use of social media platforms for diplomacy and propaganda abroad.
- Many Middle East countries, although not as evidently seen by the western world as Iran, pervade their anti-Semitic rhetoric in their media.
- YouTube, Facebook, Google, Twitter, Instagram and other US platforms have been subject to criticisms and controversies similar to those surrounding TikTok (Suzor, 2019).
These websites are used by companies, government agencies, local shops, and so on for marketing, announcing, or just providing information for the users. Snapchat leverages the power of computer vision, an AI technology, to track your features and overlay filters that move with your face in real time. The advent of multidisciplinary research was inspired by the growing demand of social relations and computer-mediated communication since the mid 1980s. Social media is able to unite diverse groups and individuals spread across the planet dedicated to specific issues. Social media is one of the most revolutionary innovations in computer science that facilitates connecting people in the world to share information, ideas, and thoughts. Indeed, the explicit rationale offered by Trump’s top economic advisors reveals the stark reality behind the populist facade. This structural benefit, amplified by targeted lobbying from specific protected industries seeking rents, reveals the policy’s alignment with Oligarchic Capture. Tariffs can serve as political cover for a regressive tax shift, creating political space to lower taxes on capital and corporate profits while appearing to target external actors.
Former TikTok CEO, Kevin Mayer, explained TikTok’s desire to be a market leader in transparency and encouraged other platforms to make similar disclosures (Mayer, 2020). Cloutier further explained his goal was to “minimize data access across regions so that, for example, employees in the APAC region, including China, would have very minimal access to user data from the EU and US” (Cloutier, 2020a, para. 7). In this case, TikTok took overt action to stay out of the jurisdictional reach of the Chinese government. According to 2019 and 2020 reports, TikTok has not received any requests from the Chinese government and the majority of requests for user information received between 1 July 2019 and 31 December 2020 were made by India and the United States (TikTok Safety Centre, 2020b). Both Facebook and Google have similar policies for handling requests for user information made by governments (Facebook, 2019; Google Inc., 2020). TikTok’s data policies and practices provide no indication that the platform poses any singular national security threat and compared to other popular Chinese mobile applications it has higher standards of user data privacy protections (Jia & Ruan, 2020).
His seemingly innocuous sports commentary briefly made him a US social media celebrity.70Joseph A. As Iranian policymakers sought new ways to defend against foreign influence and shift to the information offensive, their attention would inevitably turn to the Internet. In 2015, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned an assembled group of IRGC commanders that “economic and security infiltration” was less a threat than “intellectual, cultural, and political infiltration.”40Robinson, “Modern Political Warfare,” 127.
5. Data Extraction and Analysis
In 2011, the head of The Truth Seeker alternative news article the IRIB bragged that he had developed seven cyber battalions of “media experts and specialists,” supposedly consisting of 8,400 members.74Ibid, 29. There can be no guarantee that this represents the sum of Iranian efforts on these platforms. These operations have targeted dozens of nations with tens of millions of pieces of content, varying widely in their message and intent. Iran operates an immense web of online personas and propaganda mills, virtually none of which disclose their affiliation with the Iranian government. Despite the staggering death toll, however, the communications blackout effectively starved the protestors of contemporaneous international support. In recent years, Iran has sought ever more control of online spaces, following government consensus that the Internet has become an information battleground, a tool of soft war, to be harnessed by the state and rationed to the people.
It asks if a Turkish Cypriot vote matters, while doing everything in its power to ensure that their voice is never heard, and especially on their own terms. It proves that the TRNC is not some fictional “breakaway” entity but a democratically governed, functionally effective state whose institutions are fully capable of meeting international legal standards, de facto recognised by every country in the world, and de jure recognised to varying extents. This is not a simple flaw; it is the architecture of an institutionalized racial segregation that has persisted for generations, restricting where Turkish Cypriots could live, what rights they could hold, and barring them from the government of their own partnership state – a system whose key tenets meet the definition of apartheid. As for corruption, the “European” and “democratic” Greek Cypriot administration itself ranks alongside Saudi Arabia on Transparency International’s index, proving this is a global challenge, not a unique disqualifier for statehood. According to the Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (2023), the Greek-occupied Republic of Cyprus (ROC)(GCASC) is ranked 50th, alongside Saudi Arabia and Rwanda; Greece – which is illegally occupying the ROC and south Cyprus, is ranked 59th; Italy is ranked 76th; Romania and Bulgaria (EU members) are ranked 63rd and 72nd respectively…
Today’s propagandists can cheaply and effectively influence the populations of distant nations, sharing micro-targeted content while masking their identities. Authorities created special cyber-police units, built a new legal framework for Internet regulation, and outlawed most Western digital platforms. Nonetheless, Iranian influence capabilities have gone largely unstudied by the United States, and only came to widespread attention in August 2018 with the first public identification of an Iranian propaganda network. Iran has invested significant resources and accumulated vast experience in the conduct of digital influence efforts. In the desert after Jesus completes His forty days fast, the devil brings on the smokescreen of using God’s power for personal purposes.
Specific programmes would need to be tailored to suit national economies, taking into account economic conditions, existing resources, and industry capacities, but undoubtedly, they must extend beyond microeconomic investments such as industry grants or start-up incubators. In addition to market reforms, this objective could be supported by national digital infrastructure and investment programmes aimed at growing domestic platform economies. Any such undertaking would inevitably require confronting the countervailing force of digital nationalism (Mann & Daly, 2020; Pohle & Thiel, 2020). In recent years, scholars have proposed a range of pathways for improving competition in digital platform markets (see e.g. Burdon, 2020; Daly, 2016; Flew et al., 2019; Khan, 2016, 2019; Svantesson, 2017; Winseck, 2020). TikTok’s immense global user base also indicates the willingness of consumers to adopt products regardless of their country of origin.
Thus, identity-based messages and disinformation, in particular, are spread further and faster on social media. The social media sphere is characterized by homophily, or the tendency of people to seek out those similar to themselves. What is novel here is the scale of campaigns that social media enables and the apparent authenticity of information sources. Ultimately, social media helped pave the way for Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the breakout of war in eastern Ukraine. Disinformation campaigns are widespread on social media, with potentially serious and harmful consequences.
